The Royal Mint struck its first gold Britannia in 1987 and added a silver version ten years later, so the 2027 coins mark both anniversaries. Each one carries a wave privy mark, "40" on the gold and "30" on the silver, set against a background texture of the anniversary numbers. The reverse is still Philip Nathan's 1987 figure of Britannia. The obverse is the official coinage portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings.
The 2027 coins on Pure come in four gold sizes and two silver, each shown with its face value:
1 oz gold: £100
1/2 oz gold: £50
1/4 oz gold: £25
1/10 oz gold: £10
1 oz silver: £2
1/4 oz silver: 50p
Gold Britannias have been struck in .9999 fine (24 carat) gold since 2013, after 26 years in 22 carat. The 2027 silver coins are .999 fine. Britannias from earlier years show up in the same grid.
Since 2021 The Royal Mint has struck four visual security features into the Britannia:
Latent image: a small symbol that switches between a padlock and a trident as you tilt the coin.
Micro-text: tiny lettering around Britannia reading DECUS ET TUTAMEN, Latin for "an ornament and a safeguard."
Tincture lines: a traditional technique for showing color and pattern in metal.
Surface animation: a laser-made pattern that seems to move as the coin turns.
Pure is a peer-to-peer marketplace. Sellers post asks, buyers post bids, and every listing shows its premium over the live spot price. Take the lowest ask and the coin is yours at that price, or place a bid at your own number and let it stand in the order book until a seller meets it. A coin with no ask right now can still take your bid.
We test every coin ourselves before it ships, checking the metal's exact composition. Only coins that pass are marked Pure Qualified, and shipments are insured both ways up to $125,000.
Pure is an independent marketplace and is not affiliated with The Royal Mint.
The order book runs both ways. Post an ask at your price and wait for a buyer, or accept a standing bid. A coin you sell goes through the same testing, and the payout follows.
Who makes the Britannia? The Royal Mint, the official maker of the UK's coins, based in Llantrisant, Wales.
Why do the smaller Britannias cost more per ounce? Minting and packaging costs are spread over less metal, so a tenth-ounce coin usually lists at a higher premium per ounce than a one-ounce coin. What a premium in bullion pricing covers explains the math, and fractional gold lists small gold from every mint.
Which Britannias show King Charles III? His portrait first appeared on the Britannia in 2023. Some 2023 coins still carry Queen Elizabeth II, so check the product title and photos for the year and portrait you want.
How much gold is in a 1 oz Britannia? A 1 oz Britannia struck in 2013 or later holds one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold, about 31.1 grams.
