Description
The 1947 Mexico 50 Peso Gold Coin is a classic issue from Mexico’s renowned Centenario series, originally introduced in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain. Struck in 90% gold, the coin contains 1.2057 troy ounces (37.5 grams) of pure gold and measures approximately 37 mm in diameter. The obverse features the iconic Winged Victory, also known as the Angel of Independence, holding a laurel wreath and broken chains with the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl in the background. The reverse displays Mexico’s national coat of arms, depicting an eagle perched on a cactus with a serpent in its beak. With its substantial gold content and one of the most recognizable designs in Mexican gold coinage, the 1947-dated Centenario remains a classic example of Mexico’s historic gold issues. Later official restrikes of the Centenario also carry the 1947 date.
